Mulembwe River

This past week our team visited the second site that we are developing in Burundi – on the Mulembwe River in Bururi Province of Burundi (Mule037). This site will produce much more power than our first site – about 8MW (8000KW) – as a result of the greater water flow and elevation change. This part of Burundi is rugged and dramatic, and hiking there is not unlike hiking in the Oregon Cascades or French Alps. Interestingly, though this site is only 30km distant from our Ruvyironza site in Gitega Province, it is on the other side of the continental divide … and the Mulembwe’s waters flow to the Atlantic via the Congo River. We can’t claim that this river is “the” source of the Congo River, but it is certainly one of the more distant sources of the Congo River.
