On 14 July the President of Burundi, Pierre Nkurunziza, and the US Ambassador to Burundi, Anne Casper, came to Songa Energy’s 1MW hydropower site on the Ruvyironza River to officially dedicate the vocational training school built at the site. This school was built by Songa Energy and is owned by the local community and administration, to be used initially for workforce development during construction of the nearby hydropower plant. Following construction of the hydropower plant, the school will be provided power and equipment so that local youth and entrepreneurs can be trained in productive uses of electricity – such as for welding, carpentry, sewing, baking, agricultural processing and computers.
