Songa Energy was recently profiled in an article in the monthly newsletter of the Burundi Investment Promotion Authority (API). The article, titled “They Chose Burundi: Songa Energy Wants to Increase Access to Electricity in Burundi” is translated from French to English as follows:
Songa Energy is a limited liability company registered in Burundi and in the United States. Currently, the company is developing small hydropower sites in rural areas of southwestern Burundi. Its goal is to provide electricity to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses operating in this part of the country. According to Mr. Dan Brose, chairman and founder of Songa Energy, Burundi has many opportunities for investment in production of hydroelectricity.
He cites the mountainous terrain, good and consistent river flows, low population currently with access to electricity (only 6.5% in 2012), and strong support of local institutions – notably the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Burundi Investment Promotion Agency (API), REGIDESO (the national utility company) and elected representatives of local communities.
Mr. Brose went on to say that while his company was establishing itself in Burundi in early 2015, the assistance of API and its highly qualified personnel was crucially important. “They have always been willing to help us at any time and for any reason. Their technical knowledge and assistance with foreign direct investment has helped us to succeed,” he enthuses. Songa Energy will finalize feasibility studies, land negotiations and other agreements in the second half of 2015. Construction of the first hydropower plant is planned for early 2016.
It should be noted that Mr. Brose is not an apprentice. This innovative engineer was born in Burundi. He is a seasoned entrepreneur with proven experience in the development and direction of companies that thrive in complex environments – including Burundi, DR Congo, and Rwanda.
